from the Lotus Sutra:

“In addition, Ever Diligent, if good sons and good daughters receive and embrace this sutra, or read, recite, expound, or copy it, then they will attain twelve hundred merits of the ear. With these purified ears they will hear every kind of sound and voice in the inner and outer reaches of the three-thousand-great-thousandfold world, from the depths of Avichi Hell to the heights of the Summit of All Existence. They will hear elephant sounds, horse sounds, oxen sounds, carriage sounds, wailing, lamentations, conchs, drums, gongs, bells, laughter, speech, men’s voices, women’s voices, boys’ voices, girls’ voices, voices of reason, voices of nonreason, sounds of suffering, sounds of pleasure, voices of ordinary people, voices of sages, sounds that are joyful, sounds that are not joyful, the voices of heavenly beings, dragon voices, yaksha voices, gandharva voices, asura voices, garuda voices, kimnara voices, mahoraga voices, the sounds of fire, the sounds of water, the sounds of wind, the sounds of hells, the sounds of beasts, the sounds of hungry spirits, monks’ voices, nuns’ voices, shravakas’ voices, pratyekabuddhas’ voices, bodhisattvas’ voices, and the voices of buddhas. In sum, although they have yet to attain heavenly ears, they will hear and know, with the purified ordinary ears received at birth from their parents, all the sounds everywhere in the inner and outer reaches of the three-thousand-great-thousandfold world. They will clearly distinguish all of these various sounds, but without doing harm to their sense faculty of hearing.”
